What I'm Hearing About Instagram Part 1 - Always Add Captions to Reels.
Mar 04, 2026Disclaimer: I’m a Skin Focused Salon Coach, not a Silicon Valley tech wiz. I’m learning Instagram strategies in real-time. These ‘Learning Log’ posts are my raw notes on what I’m hearing, testing, and discovering as I grow my own account. I hope they’re useful to you.
Today’s lesson was a bit of a mic drop for me, especially since what I'm about to share is EXACTLY what I do when scrolling!
If you’re not adding captions to your Reels, you’re likely losing your audience before you even start.
We’re often told that "video is king," in social media, but no one tells us that video is often mute.
Reels have a very specific job: They're meant for reach and visibility to get you found by non-followers. They're your "hook" to find new clients. But if those new people can’t understand your "quick tips" or "storytelling" immediately without sound, they won’t stick around to follow you.
Here are five reasons why captions are a non-negotiable part of my current learning process:
-
The Silent Scroller Rule
The reality of "stopping the scroll" is that most people are watching your content with the sound off. Research suggests about 80% of users scroll in silence, whether they're in a waiting room, next to a sleeping partner, or just scrolling at work. If your reel features you explaining a skin transformation but there’s no text, it’s an immediate swipe-past for them.
-
Universal Accessibility
Captions ensure your brand is inclusive for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. In a service-based industry like ours, being inclusive is part of being professional. Don’t leave potential clients out because your content isn't accessible.
-
SEO is Watching
Algorithms “read” your on-screen text. Captions help your reels show up in search results for your specific niche (like "acne specialist" or "skin clinic"). By using captions, you’re helping the "cold" audience find you more easily.
-
Higher Retention Rates
Combining audio and visual text increases “stickiness.” People stay longer when they can follow along both ways. I’ve noticed that when I include captions, the "watch time" on my Reels goes up. It seems people are reading while listening.
-
Global Reach (and Local Clarity)
With “auto-translate” features, captions make your content digestible for everyone, expanding your brand’s footprint instantly. If you have a multicultural client base, this is especially important for your socials.
💡 The Lesson
The easier it is for someone to understand your message without turning their volume up, the faster you build trust and authority. Reels grab the attention, but captions start the sale.
Your Quick-Win Action Step:
Next time you film a reel of a treatment, don't just put music over it. Use the "auto-caption" feature in Instagram to add text. Check it for typos, hit publish, and see if your "shares and saves" increase!
